INDOHUN-OHLN and the National Standards Agency (BSN) since 2019 have had an agreement to work together in assisting laboratory organizations/institutions in fulfilling SNI 8340: 2016 Laboratory Biorico Risk Management System. This collaboration is a step taken by both organizations as an effort to improve the quality of laboratories in Indonesia. As part of the assistance, the activity began with a visit to a laboratory.

On 17-18 December 2019, a visit was made to the Central Agricultural Karatina Standards Test Center (BBUSKP), Ministry of Agriculture, East Jakarta. Specifically, laboratories included in the assessment process were the Biomolecular Laboratory and the BSL-2 Laboratory. The purpose of this activity was to provide an understanding related to SNI 8340: 2016 and its application in the organization, conducting gap analysis, providing suggestions for improvement, and discussing follow-up plans.

The event began with an opening procession and remarks by drh. Sriyanto M.Sc., P.hD as Head of the Center along with all structural officials and several functional staff. Furthermore, a brief presentation on the Laboratory Biorisiko Management System (SMBL) based on SNI 8340: 2016 was presented. The presentation then continued with the introduction of the Laboratory Assessment Tool (PPL) which will be used as an assessment tool going onward.

Assessment was carried out through three types of activities, namely interviews, document checks, and laboratory visits and observations. For the interview activity, the personnel interviewed were the individuals who were responsible as the top leadership of the biological risk management policies in the two laboratory organizations. Next was the document inspection activity which covers 16 document categories, ranging from the management of biological risk management to biosecurity. The final assessment activity was a laboratory visit and observation. This activity became a very important activity for the assessment team to be able to understand the state of the facilities and work procedures carried out in the laboratory.

Overall, the acquisition of SMBL values from the two BBUSKP laboratories was already good. The perfect score were obtained in the Personnel and Competency, the Occupational Health Program, and Equipment and Maintenance elements. These three elements are a source of strength for BBUSKP laboratories in the future so as to continue to increase their capacity. INDOHUN-OHLN together with BSN will continue to strive to maximize the application of SNI 8340: 2016-based SMBL so that there will be more quality laboratories.
