Quality Management System (QMS) Workshop Phase II

 

 Australia Indonesia Health Security Partnership (AIHSP) in collaboration with The National Serology Reference Laboratory, Australia (NRL) and Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN) carried out capacity building activities through Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) workshops. The first series of workshop activities were carried out on January 29 – February 2, 2024 in Yogyakarta and continued with online mentoring in order to deepen participants’ understanding of laboratory quality management programs. During the mentoring sessions, participants also discussed with fellow laboratories how to manage the challenges faced at the same tier level. The next series of activities is the Quality Management Systems (QMS) Phase II and Biosafety – Biosecurity Workshop held on June 24 – June 26, 2024 in , Aryaduta Lippo Village, Tangerang Regency. There were participants total46 participants which were the same laboratory staff who had previously attended the phase I workshop. 

This activity was opened with the first speech by Prof. dr. Agus Suwandono, MPH, Dr.PH (INDOHUN Coordinator). The second speech was delivered by John Leigh (AIHSP Program Director), and followed by  Mrs. Rohani Simanjuntak SKM, MKM  as the representative of Laboratory Surveillance Team, Ministry of Health RI). The last speach was delivered by  dr. Then Suyanti, MM (the Director of Public Health Governance, Ministry of Health RI). After that, participants had the opportunity to take a group photo During the 3-day workshop, participants received relevant material about QMS from speakers; Dr. Vee Armstrong and Dr. Innocent Mupunga from the National Serology Reference Laboratory (NRL), Australia and speakers from the INDOHUN expert team, Dr. drh. Diah Iskandriati, IFBA PC, Dr. drh. Joko Pamungkas, M.Sc., IFBA PC, and Dr. Tjahjani Mirawati S, Ph.D The materials provided are:

Day 1:

  1. Risk Management
  2. Continuous Improvement
  3. Staff training and competency assessment

Day two:

  1. Non-conformance management
  2. Monitoring and Assessment
  3. Good laboratory practice (GLP)

Day three:

  1. Basic Concepts of Biosafety and Biosecurity
  2. Biorisk Assessment
  3. Work procedures: Practices and Procedures (GMPP) 
  4. Work procedures: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  5. Demo of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hand hygiene
  6. Work procedures: Decontamination and Biohazard Waste Management
  7. Work procedure: Transportation of Biological Materials

Over the course of three days, participants followed a series of intensive and interactive lectures and engaged in various group activities.  The workshop was also complemented by practical exercise sessions designed to put theory into practice, as well as the screening of relevant videos to enrich and broaden participants’ insights into the topics covered. The results of the evaluation & feedback from participants were 76.2% strongly agreed that the quality of the materials provided (e.g. powerpoint slides, assignments, activities and exercises) met expectations, 78.6% strongly agreed that the discussions were useful and of high quality, 88.1% strongly agreed that the speakers were knowledgeable about the topic material, and 88.1% of participants also strongly agreed that the speakers were responsive to questions and other needs.

 

After the second phase of the workshop, online mentoring will be conducted during July 2024. This mentoring will be conducted in two sessions. The purpose of mentoring is to review the materials on the quality management system at the QMS workshop, conduct discussions on progress, obstacles, and challenges in implementing the quality management system in tier 1-3 Labkesmas, review and discuss documents related to quality management, review and discuss the implementation of biorisk management.
